I've been thinking about it. The more I read about them however the more I learn that they're pretty damn complex.

I have not made one, it's on my list of projects, but I have used one. It was quite impressive, both easy to use and quick to gain accuracy. If you can throw a baseball fairly well then you should be able to throw a dart. check out www.atlatl.com.
