Spares for your spares? How many is too many?
As a member of a rescue squad, we teach rope rescue to new members and others teams. People new to rope rescue and/or are timid about heights often want to add more backup ropes, knots, hardware, etc to every rigging. At some point the number of backups exceeds the ability to manage. The standard is one main and one backup. The systems are designed to withstand a single point of failure. All the equipment choosen is way oversized to help reduce potential failure.
How many knifes are enough? As long as you still have one, that is enough. Do I have backup knifes? Sure. For me it is about layers. I have a daily carry knife. I keep at least two knifes in my vehicle. I have at least one knife in every kit I make. If I no longer have access to my daily carry, if I can get to my vehicle or any kit, I will have a backup.
