I just watched the History Channel's MEGA DISASTER show. Today, San Francisco and a repeat of the 1906 earthquake occurring again was featured.

I took note that all of the "experts" agreed that it would be a week (7 days) before survivors could expect outside help in the way of food and water. The "experts" calculated that 98% of San Francisco's population is unprepared for a significant earthquake from either the San Andreas or the Hayward Faults.

I recall the mini quakes every night rocking our beds on government (now Coast Guard) Island while I was at Boot Camp there. San Francisco is no place for a Louisiana boy!

Mixed feelings on this stuff.

You feel sorry for people that go through a disaster like this, but at the same time it’s hard to feel too sorry if a person chooses to live where you know it’s going to happen again.



Move to a place that is not so dangerous.

You've given me another reason to avoid San Francisco. Lovely place to visit with beautiful scenery, great food, interesting neighborhoods but I'd never want to live there. Probably couldn't afford it anyway.

I particularly liked the stories about the fire department (my dad was a life-long firefighter, now retired) and the one person who could have led the recovery efforts, the fire chief, was one of the few actually killed by the earthquake.

Yeah, San Francisco reminds me of New Orleans, La,,,,a great place to visit but I sure don't ever want to live there, AGAIN!!

Yikes! Reminds me of spending 8 weeks in Des Moines during the middle of winter. Great place in the summer and to raise a family. Boring place for a business trip.

I'm a geology buff (especially earthquakes and volcanoes) and really enjoyed this book on the '06 SF quake. The Hayward Fault is the one geologists most fear could cause a HUGE quake at any time. Interestingly, a mere 1.8 quake occured yesterday just inside the beltway in northern Virginia and it was big news here. I was surprised in how wide an area people claimed to have felt it at 1:30p yesterday.
