The Energizer Energi To Go Portable Mobile Phone Charger has just made it into my EDC list. ![](http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii43/AmFearLiathMor/DSCF1180_reduced.jpg) AA cells are just about available everywhere (either to purchase or available inside remote controls, flashlights, radios etc) , the ability to recharge a cell phone in an emergency isn't. The Energizer Energi To Go Charger is also supplied with a pair of long shelf life Energizer AA Lithiums - easily enough to fully recharge a cell phone.

These are great. I modified the cable on mine so that instead of a male mini usb port, it's a female USB A port. I use it to charge anything and everything that can charge off of USB with the help of a Ziplinq retractable cable. Phones, Nintendo DS, weather radio, etc.
Worked so well I did another for my wife so she never has to miss out on a phone call or valuable Nintendo time.

I'm guessing that's for the kids. I know with most younger kids a little Nintendo portable game can keep them from getting restless when in "boring situations." It works for me, too.

I made one of these battery packs myself for my Palm Pilot, I do a lot of camping and love to read. I downloaded several hundred free e-books to a card for my Palm and wanted to be able to run it while camping. Easy to make if you have an extra power cord.

That's a great find. At my local Big Box electronic retailer those are going for around $21 and come with a couple of plugs. While looking for one that would fit my office Pantech brand phone I saw a cheaper version at $6.50 which comes with around 7 or 8 plugs for many different phones. Same form factor AND has a 3 way switch so it's OFF - ON (Charging) - two LED flashlight. I've used to charge the aformentioned phone, a Moto Q and a Moto Razor with AA rechargeables to with good results. Edited to add: Here it is at the retailer's online store, but going for over twice what I paid at their brick and mortar location!!!???http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...d=1181347745989

You can get the non-USB ones on ebay for ~$10 shipped. I wish the USB were that cheap Make a USB charger, it’s somewhat easy to do. A USB charger puts out 5-volts at 1-amp max. You can get a battery holder (4-AA battery holder) at Radio Shack along with a 5-volt regulator. Find a USB cable and wire it to the battery pack. If you don’t know how to do this, there are a lot of web sites that tell you how to make one of these. The parts would cost $6.00 or so for this project.

BIG EDIT to my above post.
For Good results scrap my comment about rechargeables. Putting out 1.2 volts (not 1.5) they will work, but WILL NOT bring your phone back 'from the dead' like disposables alkalines will.
RECHARGEABLES ARE NOT SUITABLE for emergency use. Buy long shell life disposables to be better Equipped to Survive.

I use the energizer charger with rechargeable batteries and it works just fine...they just don't last as long as Alkaline or Lithium batteries do (one charge...maybe one plus a bit of a charge).
That being said, in regards to emergency use, don't store batteries in the charger (this is what Energizer recommends). I'm convinced that the circuitry leaks current out of the batteries while it's not charging. Also, if you do use rechargeables, buy low self-discharge batteries like Enveloop or Rayovac Hybrids. I carry Hybrids in my charger and cap the ends of the batteries with a little bit of electrical tape. I also top up the batteries every once in a while...low self discharge isn't NO self discharge.
These chargers work on the principle of a 'charge pump' or DC to DC converter. They take a small voltage and turn it into a large voltage all within a tiny IC. This is how 2 1.5V batteries can output 5V DC. Using 2 1.2V batteries will still produce 5V, but the strain on the batteries is higher due to the increased difference in voltage. A weak rechargeable battery won't last very long.
I've tried them with all sorts of batteries and the Lithum AAs by far last longer than anything. I still use the Rayovac Rechargeable batteries pretty much exclusively with the charger however.

None of the chargers works with my phone, or the wifes for that matter.....we have sidekicks from T-mobile. I'm thinking of picking one up and splicing the male end of an old charger to the new unit. I'll see how that works when I have a spare 20 bucks.......

Yea, tell me about proprietary plug issues. My last phone was a piece of s^&T! As it got older, the charger died for it. Because it had a special connector, i eventually couldn't charge it properly, so i had to get rid of it.
My new phone, HTC Touch, has a mini USB connector! Now i look at the charge plug on anything electronic i buy. If it has some weird connection i don't even think twice about it and move on to something with a more common plug.
cheers al

I very rarely buy an electronic gizmo these days unless it has a hand crank or a mini usb port for charging...or runs on AAs.

"...CellPhoneShop.net..."
Thanks, I'll check, but not hold my breath. I already own a couple of battery powered cell gizmos that were advertised has having attachments for "most" cells, and not of them will fit mine. One comes close, but no cigar...
