I have question about bandages since I ride my mountain bike frequently.
If I get skin laceration due to a fall, what type of bandage should I use to cover up the wound?
I don't want the bandage to stick to the wound.

Take a look at the Crash Paks at bravesoldier.com. a little pricey, but to buy the same stuff would cost you almost the same and you'd have a lot left over. and wouldn't be sealed as this is. i think it's a great find. the stretch burn gauze wrap makes it - not a place on the body it can't secure a dressing to.

Bike crashes suck big time. I had a 1979 Impala (big car) pull out in front of me several years ago while I was doing 65 Mph out in the country. I’m reminded of it every day.
I did get a helicopter ride out of it, too bad I don’t remember it.
Better to stay off road with a motorcycle, way too many people don’t seem to see them while driving. And now with everyone having cell phones it’s bound to be even more of a problem.

Check out this website: http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/firstaid/index.htmLot of useful information. Exerpt: "After cleaning the wound, antibiotic ointment is applied. Be sure the patient isn't allergic to the antibiotic. The non-stick pad is placed next, then a gauze pad to cushion and protect. A kling wrap keeps the gauze in place." Frankie

I have to agree with the non stick pad followed by gauze but what i use is antibiotic ointment followed by prewrap (thin foam used most often to prevent hair from being removed by tape) and a layer of tape. It is what I have been using for about 4 years now all though high school soccer which involved many abrasions due to sliding. an added bonus is that with nothing more than tape and prewrap (gauze works just as well) you can create braces for joints and the two rolls dont take up much space in a FAK

I was always a big fan of the simple non-stick pad and some athletic tape. Sometimes, I would pour peroxide over the wound and watch it foam before using the pad and tape. if you plan on moving the joint, rip the tape into pieces of enough length to amek one wrap around your arm or leg, if that is where the damage was done, but not so much that the piece can wrap around the limb twice. Wrapping tape this way prevents blisters and loss of circulation, based on my experience.

Non stick pads are not non stick. They do stick, just not as much. I cut about ¾ of an inch off my left index finger a few years ago, I used the supposedly non stick pads on it. Well they did in fact stick, I had to pour water over the pad (twice a day, and it stung like crazy when the water hit the open wound) to soften it to remove the pad so I could change out the bandage.

The most effective non-stick dressing for er use is petrolatum gauze: a 4X4 coated with vaseline. Bacitracin antibiotic ointment is mostly vaseline, and works well. The downsides: air doesn'tpenetrate vaseline, so the underlying skin becomes...well...prune-like. When you change the dressing, you gotta clean off all the old ointment and put on new, cuz old ointment stops doing its antibiotic thing and you create a warm, moist dark haven for bacteria. Cleaning the wound is the most important part, drinking water works fine. ER docs no longer clean wounds with peroxide, alcohol, tincture of iodine-these kill bacteria just fine, but also kill the healthy skin cells at the margin of the wound. I the wound is really contaminated, some of the docs use a betadine/povidone iodine and tap water mix for irrigating it.

Hydrogen Peroxide is now considered contraindicated - it tends to kill good cells at the wound bed. Better to use saline or just water I'll have to do some research. However, I also have not been riding my bike so I can get road rash. For a long time, I've bene the guy who uses the iodine, peroxide, etc. When I was playing football, I'd slather methiolate on my hands each weekend after a game, of course, then i find out the methiolate was not good for me. As the Dr. to get you some of the spray or at least what it is. If you know what it is, you can find it.

I don't want the bandage to stick to the wound. I can offer some experience in this field. Just before my senior year in high school (i.e., summer of 1996), I had a pretty harsh spill after doing a jump on my BMX bike. Unfortunately for me, a street light was a little too close to the aerial trajectory of this jump and I hit the right side of my handlebars on the street light before I landed. Lets just say that my front wheel wasn’t exactly straight forward when I came back down to the ground. Let me also add that I was traveling fast enough that I was at the following street light by the time I stopped sliding down the street/gutter. After my mother saw my road rash, crapped a brick sideways, and drove me to the hospital, the doctor gave us some wonderful stuff called Silvadene (silver sulfadiazine). The basic use was to apply this white, goopy Silvadene to the road rash whenever the gauze bandages were changed. It served as a good topical antibiotic and kept the bandages from sticking to the wound pretty darn well. I still have scars on my elbows, forearms, and wrists from that happy little incident.

I found out the name of the spray my MD uses to release the bandages when they are stuck
Allclenz
And yeah, he sent a bottle home with me - helped with the wound change this AM - there was still some sticking at one point, but it did unstick 90% of the wound. If I had more time, I'd bet it would have done 100% Good deal. At least there's improvement in that area.
