I have a Large Ameribag Healthy Back slingbag that I've used for years. I bought it from Sierra Trading Post if I remember correctly. Mine has an addt'l strap that holds it close to your body (it runs at a right angle to the shoulder strap)for doing an OJ through the airport. I haven't seen a model quite like mine anywhere else (haven't spent a lot of time looking, though), a Google search may be worthwile. It's Cardura & despite hard use doesn't really show much wear.

I know. Current models on the BestBuy site look like they'll be at least one book smaller and it's already 2 smaller than I need to carry all three w/ ring binders & spiral notebooks

Age group, regional, or campus size may be factors. Over both shoulders seems to be the preference of the ones walking around here that are using packs instead of a giant open top purse w/ shoulder strap. I haven't seen many w/ true messenger bags.

By "professional" I mean suitable for the hospital.

Currently I use my backpack from about 10 years ago, a regular school backpack from Greatland. Sadly, the bottom is nearly see-through. I DO have a Wegner bag from Best Buy, but it fits my laptop perfectly. Anything more than 1 review textbook (not even a full size!) and it's overloaded. It looks great, but doesn't have a lot of "give" either.

Maybe I'll break down and get 1 size up? On the other hand... I don't usually use my computer at work, so I could carry my books there.

Well I work in a hospital, and I carry a Maxpedition Condor every day. There are so many different types of people coming in and out of hospitals that you could carry just about anything around here and not attract attention.
