I have heard of this great book (never did read it though) called "Naked into the wilderness" IIRC, Chris K was recommending it recently to someone who wanted to run away from civilization (or his parents - wasn't clear which) .

In anycase remember that humans developed tools and refined them in order to make it possible then easier then comfortable to be the top predators in a very tough food chain. neglecting to take advantage of several millenia of development is not something that I would do on a whim. With proper backup to pull me out if I fail I might want to make the experiment to see how it was to be a truely primitive man but to do this as a way of life or even as the preferred mode of camping seems folly to me. I don't want to think of facing a storm in the wilderness without something waterproof other than my skin; much less a do I want to face a bear.

Isn't 'naturalist' completely different from 'naturist'?

'Naturist' is people wandering about naked, whereas 'naturalist' is... well, it seems to have a whole load of different meanings depending on context, but none of 'em seem to be anything to do with naked-ness.

But that's just me, I could be wrong.

Pat, The term 'naturalist' = One who believes in and follows the tenets of naturalism. or = a person who studies plants and animals `Naturalism' = Showing people and experiences as they really are. Perhaps the original author wishes to join a commune style of camping where different plants and animals are discussed around the 'ol campfire in Michigan without the binding hindrance of man made fibres ????? One can only speculate :0

I aggree with minime. (Based on first hand experience.) What you have to do is just sssssssssssssssllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooo wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy 'wean' yourself from the civilization and it's tools. Going to fast or jumping the gun, will leave you cold, hungry, tired, thirsty, mosquito ridden, and not a happy camper. <img src="images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> But, it is possible, you just have to gain more skill at techniques that technology took over for ya. Use smoke to scare away mosquitos, instad of using bug-spray. In time, and with experimentation, you can learn which things make the best smoke to scare the bugs away. Assuming of coarse, you want to scare the bugs away.

You need to have a good measure of personal grit. Over hundreds of years, it has either been bred out of most people, or they just don't know how to face an onslaught of problems that nature can rise up against you. Again, you should wean yourself to this.

The one foreseeable advantage is that you get to be really tough (which will attract babes) and, you can truly go anywhere, anytime, anyhow into the woods (or whereever).

Oh, and a good book series I know of is the Clan of the Cavebear by Jean M. Auel (which follows a prehistoric human) and the Hatchet series by Gary Paulsen (which follows a modern person who goes back centuries technology wise when his plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness.) Both are inspiring, and cast out a few hints and tips.
