I was out and about the other day when I saw another Ritter PSK for sale. I know the contents are subject to change and I'm not griping or anything, but I noticed the pencil inside this one was really thin. I mean really, really thin - it was like the Kate Moss of portable survival pencils. I was more tickled by the whole thing than anything else. Does anyone know if these pencils hold up good? Despite being so thin it looked like the coating was made of some sort of rigid material...

The AMK PSK I bought has a really thin pencil like the one you describe. I have had it for about two years so far and it seems to be holding up pretty well, of course I don't take it out and use it on a daily basis.

They used to be gifts with company names printed on them. They could be sent in a regular envelope without exceeding the total weight which would require an extra stamp.

You must have bought one of the kits when availability was limited. All the kits that I own (four of them) or have ever seen either online or in various stores has featured the mini pencil.
The Miniature Pencil was what was originally specified and used for the first 9-12 months of production. Then the manufacturer quit making them and we had to use a golf pencil for a while (year or so, maybe a bit longer, don't recall). AMK finally found a new source for the mini-pencil and they have been using it for quite some time now.
