If you don´t use two shadows of equal length the method may be pretty inaccurate by day (I have a reference that says up to 30°). There´s no reason to assume that it´s better at night and it´ll work only with full moon. IMO you´re better off when you learn to identify other markers like the northern star or the southern cross.
