That is the part that baffles me somewhat. The student obviously had the forethought (or just luck, I guess) to bring a warmer jacket and cap. But, he didn’t bring long pants?

Maybe the long pants had gotten "fouled"?

Maybe he had a pair of those pants with the zip-off legs and was left with the shorts.

Gotta wonder why he started checking his chart for terrain clearance AFTER he found snow/rain. He was already flying at night! (he was supposed to know the clearance before taking off, doncha think?)
