A 16y/o boy was lost three days in San Bernadino Co.( below Los Angeles) after getting seperated from his father. He had three bottles of water. He managed to walk through a massive search, in which I participated, 16 miles to a fish farm. He arrived dehydrated, cut up with a head wound. He encountered one bear. He was an 'experienced hiker' according to the father. I think Im going to start writing this website on bathroom doors, dollar bills and the serman announcements at churches!

This kid was hiking with his sister and father ,and they went ahead on the trail. Their goal was to reach a local peak. They met a descending hiker who advised it was to late in the evening to reach before nightfall. the sister turned back. the kid decided to 'prove' he could do it. He had water, beef jerky and a flashlight. He lost the flashlight when he slipped off the steep trail.

It sounds too familiar.

About a year ago a young boy from a neighboring town was with his father and older brother mountain biking in Utah. He went ahead of the group alone, took a wong turn and hgot lost.

Unfortunately, this story had a sad ending as the boy died from exposure. His familly has since made a big effort to raise money to improve trail signs. But the truth is that if he had just obeyed one simple rule, stay with your group or your buddy, he would likely be alive today. Improved signage is a good thing. Education is better.

Willie Vannerson
McHenry, IL

Ron, Im going to hit all your posts at once. Yet another lost hiker showed up in the Sequoiah National Forest. He was lost 8 days without any thing. He actually staggered into a campsite. The people were scared and drove off. Later he saw a group of hikers, but was to weak to be heard ( no whistle.) Iodine treated water is easily masked with a packet of koolaid. I think it tastes like Whiskey. I want you to keep a dictionary at your computer station. You have interesting posts and ideas. Your teachers will tell you improper spelling and grammar detract from a writer's credibility and ease of storytelling ( not that we all still make blunders.)
