I'm planning to purchase either the MicrOfix or the ResQfix PLB. As far as I can tell from this and other articles, the only difference is that the ResQfix comes with a neoprene flotation sleeve. So far, so good.

Now, here's my question: the MicroOfix seems to seems to run $35+ more expensive than the ResQfix, even though, with the addition of the neoprene sleeve, the ResQfix is presumably worth marginally more than the MicrOfix.

Am I missing something, or is the ResQfix a better deal than the MicrOfix?

Thanks for any thoughts or insights!

Greg

You are correct, the neoprene flotation jacket and some cosmetic differences are the only difference between the Resqfix and the Mircofix.

There's another minor but potentially significant difference I noted recently. The MicrOFix carrier has a closed belt loop, the ResQFix has an open clip. I think I'd prefer the closed loop. I thought I took a photo, but now I can't find it. <sigh>

It would be really nice if ACR would sell you the neoprene case separately so that you could have the closed loop security of the MicrOfix and the flotation ability of the ResQFix, but no go. I really don't understand the corporate logic on that one.

I was figuring on carrying the PLB in my pack (vs. on my belt) anyway, for several reasons:
  • To protect it in case I fall, which happens from time to time
  • To keep it from bouncing around as I run
  • because I already use my belt for things I need to access frequently
While it's certainly possible that I might injure myself in a way which precludes me from removing and opening my pack, but which would not keep me from removing the PLB from my belt and activating it, the likelihood of that seems pretty darn small.

On the other hand, it would be a shame to die with a $600 PLB in my pack just because I couldn't get to it. Does anyone have any thoughts or insights on this question?

Affix it to your pack shoulder strap.
