I'm looking for books or any other information i.e. websites that have good specific information on surviving in the wilderness on a long term basis. So it would have to have info on building log homes for shelter, information on edible vegetation, etc. Anyone know of a good source? Thanks.

It's not geared specifically for "wilderness" but I have found that this site has many practical ideas for living off the grid. And this one has some great tips on primitive living.

I recommend picking up the first five or so volumes of the Foxfire books. They are chuck full of "how-to-do-it" information gleaned from the backwoods Appalachian old-timers. It's amazing what they accomplished with an axe and a few other simple tools.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Tom Brown's Wilderness Survival Book (IIRC). He talks about how to live in the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on your back, not even a knife (shudder). Has information about edibles and log cabins and hogans, that sort of thing.

Hi Chris,

The other recommendations in this thread are super! I would highly recommend any of Bradford Angier's books, especially 'How to Survive in the Woods" He and his wife Vena took off from NYC to the remote Peace River area in Canada where they learned to live in the outdoors. Very interesting reading as well, their other books keep you interested with the story of their wilderness adventures as opposed to boring 'how to' stuff. Tom Brown's books are very interesting as well. The Reader's Digest 'Back to Basics' book is good and easily found on EBay or Amazon very cheap.

Foxfire books are very good.

Also you can get good information, shocking as it may be, from state and federal governments. Look up your local 'agricultural extension' agency. Also the US and state Departments of Agriculture, Forestry department and US Government printing office.

Some of these can be accessed on-line. Libraries are a good source and the Government printing office has a huge collection of DoA bulletins and books available for cheap.

A local guy wanted to set up a self-sufficient goat farming operation. He was able to get plans for all the buildings, including the house, for free from the DoA and several books advising him on how to lay out the farm. Animal and crop ratios. How to raise the goats and the costs along the way. The DoA was set up t

One of the original, if not the original, publications on self-sufficient living is The Mother Earth News. Been around since 1970. I especially liked it in its beginning, though still lots of good articles and resources on their website as well as today's print version.

If you feel like spending $60, you can get back issues from first thru 2007 on CD here .
