I had a similar problem at my old house. It turned out to be something called an "anode" rod? in my hot water heater. Once it was removed/replaced the problem disappeared for a while.

BigDaddyTX do you have water that comes from a well or does it come from the municipal supply?

Does it smell like sulphur?

Some states offer water testing through local services. I'm not sure how much it costs, but it may be worth having it done.
