I've been carrying a trash bag and a tea candle in my backpacking jump pouch for some time now. The idea is that I could make a head opening in the bag and hunker down over the candle to survive a cold night in the woods.

I've read a couple of sites/posts that talk about cutting out one of the bottom corners, but it seems more sensible to cut a hole in the middle of the bottom.

Has anybody had any experience with this? Or do you have any thoughts or ideas before I start cutting up bags?

When you cut out one corner you have a hood from the other. A cut in the middle of the bottom offers no head cover. Bear in mind that youŽll loose a lot of body heat over a uncovered head.

Instead of cutting a corner you may have better luck cutting a semi-circle a couple of inches below the corner. This will create a natural peak just over your head.

The other replies answered your question. I would only add that some cheap bags can be cut to try the various configurations. Trash bags are a natural for Duct Tape tailoring and mends <img src="images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
