Hmm, I thought that cavalry wasn't really utlized much in china prior to the Han dynasty, but chariots were more popular and would make use of pole arms a lot more. Maybe I have my dynasties confused...
Anyways, the kung fu weapon sounds a bit like a halberd. It has its uses.
For a fighting pole arm, I always thought the Naginata was pretty darned awesome. Basically a heavy Katana blade on the end of a shaft. They were used fairly effectively against mounted cavalry IIRC up to the 18th century.
