Our community offers a class to the public for disasters. This covers basic firefighting, first aid and touches on lots of good general info. for the citizens of our community. It is generally taught by firefighters who are typically very familiar with these topics. I can find out more for you if you'ld like.

It would also be a good idea to, as others already mentioned, to visit your local fire department. They can be a great resource to you-- great fun for the kids in terms of a tour-- and in many communities will come out to your house for a free fire safety check. Also, often classes are provided in CPR, first-aid, and fire safety... not always free, but typically cheap.

9fingers is probably refering to CERT training.

My wife and I completed this training and while it is very basic and fairly wide in scope it was worth doing. Getting family, neighbors, community members involved and meeting the local Fire Department is a worth while activity. I would definately recommend CERT training if available in your community.
