I just wanted to put this out there.

Christopher Nyerges, Dude McLean, and I have a site, "dirttime.com." This site is just a compilation of articles we've had in "Wilderness Way" magazine. Some of those articles are from us and some from other folks who have given us articles.

Our most recent article is from our good friend, John McCann, author of "Build the perfect Survival Kit".

here it is for your enjoyment >>>>>>a-frame shelters

enjoy

good site--quality work--but-----in a survival situation i
would build less shelter and use my time finding firewood--water--so on..

canoedogs, thanks!

One thing to keep in mind, for this article, just because it is natural material doesn't mean it is a survival situation.

Very nice site. Interesting material (food for thought).

Wish I were on Kodiak Island.

Alan--the shelter was top-of-the-line..worthy of Dan Beard
himself..when i looked at it i was thinking with a bag of
flour and a couple rabbit snares you could winter over in
something like that..i guess when i come to this site i key
into "survival mode" thats why i made the remark about too
much shelter---by the way--nice to see a Duluth pack get
some air time..i live out of one for a month a year and for
canoe tripping they are the only way to go..

That's a pretty fancy looking shelter! One thought though, assuming the nights are chilly and you want a fire for warmth ... this shelter might be a bit of a fire hazard.

haertig, LOL! yeah, i guess it could be a fire hazard. However, In my experience, it depends on how you make your fire.

The beauty of a nicely insulated shelter like that is you can close off the entrance and stay pretty warm without a fire.

An open shelter heated by a fire all night seemed like a good idea until I tried it.
