If your requirement is for long term data storage/archiving, then the Fujitsu DynaMO 2300U2 may be the way to go as it has a 30 year media storage lifetime.

I use a USB stick for a once week or more often backup & carry to class copy. Would one of these be better than the typical stick?

Where do you find a shielded USB memory stick? I assume you're not talking about the "rubber shielded" ones, but some form of electrical/static shielding. I can't seem to find such a beast.

Careful here. "memory stick" is not USB. My MIL walked into a computer store asking for a memory stick and got a Sony memory stick, I told her to ask for a USB flash drive next time. The term memory stick is getting mis applied to flash drives.
