im searching for a new signal mirror and i have seen signal mirrors with a red reflective side for night signalling. apperently you have to shine your flash light in to the reflective surface to signal at night.
but are these things effective and worth the price ?
if flashing with you flash light is more effective it will be basicly ussless, since you are goning to use the flashlight if that's the case and buy a normal signal mirror with's is cheaper

or buy a red transparent foil sheet (like ones used in photo industry) to cover your old mirror...

Check out the signalling section of this site. Doug did a review of that mirror.

I believe the red reflective backing is the same stuff that roadsigns are covered with. Its designsed to relect back the light from headlights. In my way of thinking its not for you to shine a torch on, like you said there would be no point. It may be used to relect back the light from searchlights etc, and give a red flash to help rescuers home in on you.

Two different things.

The SAFE SIGNAL "Day/Night" mirror has a clear side and a red side, both standard mirrors with no aiming aid. Marketed by various companies in different sizes. POS, IMHO.

Rescue Reflectors adds a red retro-reflective label to the back of their signal mirrors.
