I've noticed over the years that a mother ANYTHING defending her baby/babies is better left alone.

The bear didn't put up much of a fight, if it had, I suspect that the outcome might have been different. What I really want to know is where the camera operator was standing!!!

It was a tad grainy, so I would say he was using a long lens for that. MomCat wasn't in a good mood, and if the cameraman was closer (or upwind), she probably would have beaten the snot out of HIM, too.

I agree. He seemed timid. Although I'd bet that bite to the face kinda changed his mind about how easy it was going to be.

"...some redemption for bears..."

Not much. Again, not much aggression on the part of the bear. I kept waiting for a swipe of the paws, etc...

"Again, not much aggression on the part of the bear."

That's a cub fighting the wolves. He must have lost his mom and was really hungry to take on a pack of wolves. I guess in the end they didn't think he was all that much of a threat. Had it been cubby's dad, it would have been a different story.

Bears have weapons - teeth, claws, and strength. If you don't think those are good enough weapons, then by all means, go pick a fight with a bear.

A cougar has somewhat the same weapons, but I guess the strength of a bear is much greater. But.. the cougar probably moves faster.

Pound for pound I think the Cougar has a distinct strength advantage, and his tools are more refined and efficient for inflicting damage as he is a specialized predator. I would not bet on the average sized black bear to beat the average sized cougar in a fight where the motivations are equal. Of course, if I had to voluntarily join the fray, it would not be without my Super Redhawk and those 300 grain jacketed flat top compressed loads.
