Hello All,

Does anyone know where I can get hard red winter wheat in Minnesota? shipping rates have gone through the roof and I am looking to source some grains locally.

Have you tried contacting Elevator operators? Depending on how much you're willing to buy (and if they're storing the product) they'll sack it and sell it to you.

Have you tried some of the local food co-ops or health food stores? They might carry it.

I have been picking up some for bread making at our local Whole foods store, but they are way over priced by the pound. I haven't tired any elevators yet, but that is a good idea. I am just looking to add a bunch for my home food storage, but don't want to pay the same price for shipping as the grain itself costs.

Call your local Church of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormons). They will know where the best deals are.

Thanks Susan. I found a place about 45 minutes from here that i am going to give a call tomorrow. To be honest, I have been a little afraid to call the Mormons. No offense to anyone, I just don't know why.

Why? They have no qualms about calling you. grin

Truely though, if you have a question about stockpiling foods they are the ones to talk too.

You want seed wheat? If you want it to eat rather than plant, make sure it isn't treated. And you don't want GM seed, either. There must be other places. AUGUST?

Thanks Susan. I am going to do some investigation on these sources and no I was going for all organic seeds. It is planted in late fall and "over winters" in the ground and grows right away in spring.

Here is a short overview:

Yes, I was just reading that in Gene Logsdon's book "Small-Scale Grain Raising", and thought that I would try it next year, mostly as an experiment. Right now, I just use the hard red from the bulk food bins at the grocery store, and put it on pots to grow grass for the indoor cats. How much area were you planning on planting?

None currently, but I have thought about tilling up the yard and planting wheat. :-) Actually though, I am going to use a large portion of our 44W' X 125D' city lot to plant veggies this summer and canning the excess.

I have been looking around and I might have a couple of sources for wheat. I will let you know when all the queries come in.
