I know that some of us have dogs, as pets or working dogs, and are making sure we can provide for them.

It's not hard to keep a few weeks' worth of commercial dog food around.

But it may be worth considering alternatives and unconventional approaches, just in case.

So, how are you planning to feed your hounds?

I just make sure to have at least one full 50 pound bag of dry food in addition to the open bag I'm feeding them from. That should last my lab and sheltie for a while.

I have neighbors. Most of them would just be a PITA in an emergency, anyway. One at a time, probably not much refrigeration needed.

That's what I do. One 40# bag stored out in the RV will last my lab a full month, 6 weeks if we have to ration.

Yeah, but when you run out of neighbors, your critters might start looking at you as a meal on the hoof...

How's about when I run out of dog food and neighbors, I eat the hounds to supplement my own foodstock. I am at the top of the food chain around here, I am the one with the gun after all.

I saw a sci fi movie many years ago [ early 70's I think ] called a "boy and his dog" starring a young Don Johnson. Low budget , Post apocolypse survival scenario . Anyway , he had the same idea about feeding his dog .
Funny how that movie stuck in my mind .

LOL, guys/gals, that obvious reserve of dog chow never even occurred to me. Reminds me of the time when a travelling salesman wouldn't get out of his vehicle because the hounds (Great Danes) were barking at him ... and when I came to the rescue, he tried very hard to sell me a driveway alarm system. Well, duh! :-)

I normally have a few bags of dog food around, since I usually buy several at a time. The Danes go through 40 lbs. in about a week, though (not including travelling salesmen).

I've had a lot of dogs over the years, and they're more omnivorous than most people realize. At least country-raised dogs are. My dogs, who are definitely not starving, will eat green grass, berries and apples, peas, carrots, and potatoes raw and cooked. They'll sneak into the garden and steal stuff when you're not looking. We have to put an electric fence around our garden to keep them out.

A few years back, when we were trying to save money, I bought several bags of "pig starter" which was barley, soy, canola oil, and vitamin/mineral supplements, and about $7.00 for 40 lbs. I'd cook up a batch on the wood stove every morning, and they would nose the commercial dog food out of the way to get to it. It didn't go rancid, even after a year's storage. And it smelled pretty darn good -- I was tempted to try some for breakfast.

Just some observations and ideas.
