Does anyone know of an on-line review/comparison of various vacuum packing machines? I have been using a Tilla brand Foodsaver with mixed results. Is there a way to create high-grade durable vacuum packaging for air or moisture sensative items at a non-commercial level?

Jed, I suspect most of the home-use machines are made by the same company. I've looked an two from different "manufacturers" and found they were the same as my Tilla.

I have to say I've had great results with mine, and routinely pack many emergency supplies and even clothing for backcountry trips. I do find that the vacuum is more likely to fail if I re-use the bags (regardless of the company's statement that you can do so). Also, after the primary vacuum and seal... I put another seal in 3/4" above the first.

I once took all my clothing for a 10 day winter mountain trip "sucked down" into just a few hard-as-bricks vacuum bags. VERY CONVENIENT. But, getting back was a hoot! Lots of stuffing and stomping on the old duffle bag.
