I was experimenting with ways to store wire and tryed wrapping it around a cocktail stick / toothpick. It worked very well, was extremely compact and holds a suprisingly large amount of wire. I only wrapped it one strand thick so it was only a fraction wider that the stick. I suppose you could build it up and hold more.

Nice idea! You may consider substituting an awl or appropriately sized needle for the toothpick.
