After a year or so of EDC, I thought it was time to share my Becker Necker modification. I changed the handle so it holds a scout fire starter. Then wrap it with 550 cord.

Here is a picture of the stock knife.

I cut out the necessary hole then filled the handle with JB Weld (a common epoxy). The fire starter fits well and is just a very bit thicker than the handle.

Then wrapped it with 550 cord.

I have been carrying this EDC for at least a year now. No problems. I am rough on knives and beat on them, pry with them etc. The JB Weld has held up well. Great knife.

Hey, that's really cool. How did you cut the shape out of the handle?

The forum software probably just doesn’t like bitmap (bmp) images because they are usually large and uncompressed (a.k.a. they tick off the people with dial-up). I’d just edit your post and stick URL tags around them instead.

That's a nice modification and a good job with the J.B.Weld.

Thanks for the remedy. I changed the files to jpg, edited the post and it works fine. Thanks again.

Blast: I don't remember how I cut the hole. It was a long time ago and I can't even remember what I had for breakfast. Probably used a dremel tool with a cutting wheel.

I thought that if I cut up the handle it would bend under severe use, but so far I have not been able to bend it. Of course I have not put a pipe over the handle. But as hard as I can work it by hand it has not deformed. I also filled in that annoying notch on the end of the handle. I have pounded on the end several times and so far no breaks in either the JB weld or the handle.

Great knife. I have several benchmade folders, but I seem to EDC the becker necker and not the BM's. Also have a Becker Crewman which I reserve for "serious" work.

I'm a little confused (not all that uncommon). What exactly did you do with the JB Weld? Not attach the Sparklite to the metal, then how would you get it out to use it? Can you clarify for an old dude who also does not remember what he had for breakfast???

Sorry, I should have posted a before picture. Found one on the net which is a bit blurry but conveys the image.

I filled in all the holes and then cut out the center vertical bar. I was worried that leaving only the "margin" metal would weaken the handle. However a year of use it seems as good as ever. Guess the JB weld helped it a lot. I reallllly hated the wire breaker or whatever slot in the right hand part of the handle. It used to catch on everything and ripped several holes in my shirt. Closing it with JB weld was one one of the things that motivated me to make the modification.
