Ok, I admit it, I don't really like snow. Too many bad memories from working for Uncle Sam and the state in really cold weather for really long hours with really crappy equipment. But I recently moved to the low Sierra, and may actually have some of the dreaded white stuff fall on my old bald head real soon. Watching Peter Jennings on the news last night made me think of something I have always wanted to do...capture falling snowflakes and look at them under magnification. Is this something the average person can do, or does it take a PHD with a battery operated electron microscope??? If the average dummy (me) can do it, how???

Hah. Get a magnifying glass and black glove, stick you hand outside and look at the snowflakes thru magnifinyg glass. Amazing stuff you will see my friend. Maybe to understand why they are formed the way they are you may need someone with good schooling to give you an explanation but to look at their beauty and amazing shapes you just need a good heart.
