‘Just add water’ instant shelters

An emergency shelter which can be set up in 40 minutes as a solid concrete structure will be made in south Wales after winning worldwide interest.

The question is… will it fit in a bug out bag? laugh

Still very cool anyway… And potentially extremely useful!

I saw this on another forum. I'm not sure if it is as strong as they say, having had less than thrilling experiences with quickcrete, but for most things it should be fine. It should be faster to ship than most other hard prefab shelters I've seen, and it beats tents like a drum.

Any "tent" you can stand on is a good one smile

I watched the entire "life-cycle" video on this unit. As a humanitarian-relief project, it beats the crud out of cardboard boxes or conex containers--but I believe the 10 year life span claimed is exaggerated. In a humid environment I wouldn't expect more than three to five years before serious degradation set in.

If they need something more permanent, it could be used as a form for shotcrete.

Quikcrete is a whole other animal. All it is is a concrete mix with an ingredient to speed up setting.

My question about this shelter (which seems like a good idea) is the storage life of the concrete. If it can be sealed in a totally waterproof container, fine. But if it can be exposed to mere atmospheric moisture, its life is severely limited.

It will be something to watch.
