I remember reading someone posting a question about starting fatwood with a ferro rod.

Yesterday, I started my fire with a little bit of fatwood and a ferro rod. While scraping the fatwood with the back of a blade to make a pile of "dust" works, I do not like it in the wind and do not prefer that method at all. Instead, I make a little feather stick with the fatwood. It is actually more of a feather flower or feather broccoli than a feather stick. Anyway, it took a spark readily and got my fire started up quickly. Since I was in a little bit of a rush yesterday, I didn't take any pictures, so I thought I would take some today.

Feathered fatwood with the Fallkniven U2 that I used today.

After taking a spark.

Sorry I didn't take a picture of the feathering or the sparking. I didn't thank I could do that and take a picture at the same time safely.

Good jorb, i've lit fires with mine and a sparkrod too. How do you like your U2? I got mine to EDC instead of the rsk which lives in a bob now. I had to make two modifications until i was happy with it. First, the torx screw on the side was too sharp and scratched the crap out of my wallet so i filed it down. Second, the edge was rather obtuse, what's the point of the fancy powdered steel then? So i took it down to maybe 15deg per side and it's scary sharp, perfect for envelope filleting and gutting UPS boxes smile

I took one look at that soil and said, "I bet that guy lives in Hawaii." Then I looked at your screen name (ha).

Nice discovery. I have a bunch of fatwood I found at a garage sale, and I'm going to give that a try also with a magnifying glass.

aardvark, the U2 is a nice slicer, but just doesn't feel overly robust to me. The F1 on the other hand...

my usual EDC is an alox farmer.

sotto, what a keen eye you have!
