First off I'd like to say hello to all of you , and thank each of you in advance. I am new at this so I hope that these questions do not seem to ignorant. What I'd like to know is , specificaly, what is each item used for in a PSK ? Are there suitable substitutes ? ( snarewire=pianowire) Where do you find most of your supplies ? Here in the states, can you find the british waterproof matches that are recommended so highly ? I know that this is a long topic invoking even longer answers , but asking is the best way to learn. Again , Thank you to all who take the time to respond.

First, welcome. Second, No question invokes ignorance, only learning- especially when we discuss it once more. Quoting G.K. Chesterton " A man who has seen something 999 times is in great danger of seeing it correctly the 1000th" . Please take some time and read through Doug's many articles. A PSK is the equivelent of a life preserver to a Liferaft ( Winslow's for us raft rats ). Each item is a minimalist duplicate of equipment not easily replicated in an emergency, should our dedicated gear become lost or destroyed. As such, there is a great deal of variation; urban kits containing money, coastal kits holding fishing items etc. Most of the items discussed, ie lifeboat matches are readily available through several vendors. We even have a few forum members who deal in small quantities of hard to get items; such as Bagheera in the Netherlands. So read the articles, write down questions and we will answer them in the forum.

First let me welcome you to the forum. A site I think is good for getting some things for survival is:
www.actiongear.com
This sit may not have everthing you need but it has some stuff. If you want a great list of suppliers check out Doug's list of suppliers:
http://www.equipped.org/sources2.htm
So those pages should get you started.
