Salut les anglais. Today I bought a Kilkenny Irish Cream ale to try something new. After drinking it, I realized something banging in the can. I cut the can with scissors and realized there's like a ping pong ball in it. I was really perplex until I found it's written "contains floating widget" on the can. What on earth is the purpose of this ball?

Thanks for lighting my lantern.

Frankie

If it is like the one in Guiness it contains nitrogen to produce the "head" that makes Guiness Guiness

Wow they make floating widgets now !! smile The ball contained CO2 which releases itself when the ring pull is pulled, to put all the little bubbles in the Kilkenny Irish Cream. This is so that you get that pub draft effect. Flat Kilkenny is not as nice as Kilkenny with all the gas bubbles.

Edit - Wikipedia has an explaination http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget_%28beer%29
The ball indeed contains Nitrogen.

don't forget about disposable diapers and baby wipes. They rank VERY high on new parent's list of most valuable inventions,,,,right along with ziplock bags.

Of course proper beer is nearly flat, brown and usually has little bits in it. But it needs to come from a cask, or a decent bottle.

Widgeted can are great for Guiness though
