Getting away from all the "low-tech" fire starting solutions, I just picked up a new toy at Revy - the Omega Turbo Lite (Cordless Butane Mini--Torch) from Iroda. (Made in Taiwan, imported to Canada by Omega.) I wasn't going to, since I already have something very similar from Radio Shack, but they had them at the checkout counter when I was standing in line and - something just came over me. (It was only $9.95 Canadian - always a good excuse to buy something. :-)

It's like a big fat Bic lighter - about 3.5" long and about 1" in diameter. It has a keychain attached, but I wouldn't trust it - the plastic ring on the body looks pretty flimsy. I wouldn't want it in my pocket, either - the safety catch and the igniter can both be set off by the same movement.

When you do ignite it, you get a bright blue flame - the "inner flame" is about 3/4" and the outer flame about 1". The card that came with it advertises a flame of 1300 C (2400 F).

Unlike the Radio Shack one (part # 64-8114), which uses a "refillable fuel cell" that looks remarkably like a disposable lighter ;-) the Turbo Lite has an internal fuel tank and is refilled like a conventional butane lighter. (The RS fuel cell also has a refilling valve at the base, though.)

I think, after having looked at it closely, that it wasn't a waste of money - I can always toss it in my toolbox - but I prefer the Radio Shack one. For one thing, although I'm not really happy with the RS safety lock, it at least requires a separate movement from the ignition. For another, after I replaced the "fuel cell" (which didn't come with a flint or striking wheel) with a disposable lighter of the same size and shape, it worked fine, so I have redundancy ; even if the piezo-electric starter carps out on me, I can still use the lighter inside.

Just thought I'd share my thoughts, in case anyone else sees this and was wondering if they were worth the money.
