CAPTCHA systems are now obsolete...

Not really. It's still much more difficult/expensive/slow for spammers to automatedly create accounts getting past the CAPTCHA than if there were no CAPTCHA. Plus they have to write software per CAPTCHA system, so creating your very own CAPTCHA system may help (unless it's particularly worthwhile to target your site, eg Hotmail).

It's just that CAPTCHAs aren't (and never were) the complete solution.

This particular case was not a case of automated spamming, anyway. I was actually online while the poster made both of his/her spam posts, and judging from the pretty good amount of time that passed in between the two spam postings, it seemed manual to me.

By the way, I did notify immediately! If you’re gonna advertise shoes around here, they darn well better be built like a tank and have some steel/safety toes on ’em… this is the Survival Forum after all!
