I have a swollen left pinky toe for over 2 weeks. I wear larger shoes but the pinky still rub the shoe leather. I have to wear double socks to prevent blisters.

Are my feet getting bigger as I grow older?
do you guys have over grown feet?

If it is badly swolled, I would suggest a trip to the dr.

As for feet getting bigger, mine seem to go up and down almost daily. I wear the same boots, and essentially the same sox (same style, size, brand) every "working" day. Sometimes the boots just slide on, other days I have to force my feet into them, and loosen the laces a bit to boot (thank goodness for lace-to-toe boots)...

I read somewhere that, as we age, the only things that never stop growing are our ears and nose.

"I wear larger shoes but the pinky still rub the shoe leather."

Find a genuine cobbler's shop. Not many of them around any more. Like everything else shoes have become disposable and generally not worth repairing. But cobblers are handy to have around.

They have a specialized device known as a shoe stretcher that they can use to stretch the leather in the offending area to get you a little more room. Last time I had it done it took all of ten minutes and cost me five bucks. A persistent issue that had been bothering me all day and likely would have taken a few more days to clear up on its own was quickly made right at a reasonable cost.

Lacking a friendly cobbler I have resorted to doing the job myself. I have had good results using a damp cloth to moisten the offending area and then using a rounded object to stretch the leather from the inside. I had luck using a hickory hammer handle. Once it was stretched I packed the interior with newspaper overnight so it wouldn't shrink back.

Not quite as quick and effective as what the cobbler did but it made a world of difference.

Try going to a good shoe store and find a knowledgeable person there to correctly size your feet.

It is an eye opener. I did that when I got plantar faciaitis and the doctor suggested getting Mephisto shoes from the Walking Company since they gave a discount to his patients. The shoe guy was great. He really knew his stuff. I learned that I have been wearing the wrong sized shoes almost all my life. Every brand will vary as far as sizing goes and I find that my correct shoe size can vary by as much as 2-3 full shoe sizes depending on brand and type of shoe.

He told me that the trick is to buy the shoes that flex where your feet flex and not by the numerical size. That has made a huge difference for me. I hope that might help you.

no. I don't have a gout. The pinky toe is slightly swollen from rubbing with the leather. when I wear large hiking boots, my pinky doesn't come in contact with the boots side wall. my feet feel fine.

Good luck with that. I have tried stretching boots myself, bought one of those wooden with a screw adjustment gizmos. Whatever stretching I managed to accomplish seemed to be short lived, the boot would return to it original size in a couple of days...
