I have only found this Space brand poncho in one place on the net. That tells me it is 1)a new product that hasn't gotten around yet, or 2) is either not practical or effective.

It looks pretty handy to me from the description - large enough to use as a shelter, especially with the grommets, and also has the Space-brand heat reflective qualities.

Is anyone here familiar with it? What do you think?

I've seen them; they have been around for a while. It’s basically the same as the combat casualty blanket but with a hood as well, good quality emergency gear. Brigade Quartermasters sell them as well.

I bought a couple years ago to keep in the cars. I've never opened the packages, but from all I can tell they're made of exactly the same material as regular rectangular space blankets that you see lots of places. And I bought these for exactly the same reason you suggest - at the very least they're a space blanket, and being able to have a hood seems like a nice little bonus.

if you have ever used a Space Blanket as a shelter the
first thing you notice is that your body is warm and your
head cold..this was that best thing they could have done
to make them really work..

this Space Blanket--Crazy Creek fabric chair combo
is my favorite method to beat a cold rainy day on
the trail..using the poncho version you could just
about live out in the open..
