I have some smoke grenades. Will they do as emergency flares? It is very unlikely that I would be able to get any real flares. These grenades have purple and white smoke.

cheers

Hmm
I guess smoke would work in certain situations in daylight, but I've seen campfire smoke disperse through a forest and not be noticeable above/outside the forest.

In the UK you can get flares (Mini Flares?), I've seen them in decent outdoor shops, for example at the Up'n Under store in Cardiff.

You can buy mini flares in the UK from Cotswolds outdoor shops. You cannot order them via the net because they are explosives. I think the address is cotswolds-outdoor.co.uk

reinhardt

Wow, thanks for all the replys. I got these from a friend who went to an airsoft arena in wales called dragon valley. The are legal and I believe they are quite easily avalible in the UK from paintball and airsoft suppliers. They are about 3" by 1" and cylindrical.

I carry smoke and aerial flares in my PSK and SAR bag. I buy them from Wal-Mart in the boating area or at the boating/marine shop in town. Beware white/grey smoke it can easily be mistaken for fog, haze, etc. Red is a good contrast anywhere, most boat stuff is red. These chain-pull activated smoke pots are small, about the size of a 35mm film can and come in a 2 pack for about $15.00. The aerial flares are 1x6 inches, come in 3 pack and are $ 21.00-pk. If you need some SMOKE then find shomer-tec they sell true mil-spec Smoke grenades for about $35.00 ea. with a pleasing choice of colors (purple is my favorite).

Where do you buy the potassium nitrate. I've heard of this recipe before but have never known where to look for it. Also, how much of the product would you need for an effective signal?

Thanks in advance,

Chris
