The book "Into The Wild" by Jon Krakauer is an excellent read. I hope that Sean Penn has made a movie that is befitting of the book.

There is a trailer of the movie here.

The Coast Guard once intervened AT DOCKSIDE to stop a young woman from making a solo voyage around the world. She had no boating experience, the running lights were candles in coloured jars and she too had lots of rice ( mumbled something about a macrobiotic diet, in my opinion a mispelling of macroidiotic.) The boat was well ballasted though. She must have had close to 100 hardback books for recreational reading- not one by Conrad, Melville or Homer, let alone navigation.

Exactly what I think. I read the book, & it made the guy seem like some sorta folk hero...the guy was just plain bored. He really should've known better.

At least no one had to waste time and effort looking for McCandless.

I saw the movie on Friday (opening in the Bay Area).
I am a big fan of the book and the movie; although quite long is well done. The panorama and nature shots alone are worth seeing.
Many folks are very critical of Christopher McCandless and some don't like Mr Penn's politics but that aside it is a beautiful film that did the book justice.

It is funny that many criticize Chris for only taking a .22LR with him although many experts consider the .22 to be an optimal survival and foraging gun. Other than bears he probably could have survived with the .22 if he new a bit more about hunting.
After all according to his journal he killed a moose with a .22lr rifle.
