Has anyone tried the 5 watt TerraLux replacement bulb for the 2D cell Maglite that they are selling on Ebay yet? How do they compare to the 3 watt you buy at Wallyworld? I have the 3 watts in all my Maglites and they seem to do fine, was looking for something brighter for the one I cary in my truck. The 5 watt is averaging around $24.99 and the 3 watt at Wallyworld is $18.99

I not sure which 5 watt Terralux replacement bulb you are thinking of purchasing but you may be interested in the TLE-6EXB TerraLUX MiniStar5 SSC P4 U bin LED upgrade for 2-3 C/D cell Maglites

Its rated at 3 W using a Seoul P4 emitter but will be brighter at 150 Lumen than other 5 W Luxeon replacements. Will improve battery life considerably and be brighter.

Oh its the same price also as the ones you've mentioned at Wallyworld. BTW 150 Lumen is pretty darn good.

The reason I would also go for a lowered powered but more efficient emitter is also the issue of power rating and the ability of the 2D maglites to dissipate 5W without proper heatsinking

I've also heard good things about the TLB-6EXB and that it is an improvement over the MagLED. But Terralux has a number of different drop-ins, so it's not clear which one is being asked about.

Well I just received my TerraLux TLE-6EXB 5watt upgrade bulb today, it's listed at 140 Lumen's. I'll have to wait till tonight to compare it to my 3 watt maglite replacement bulb. I'll post later and let everyone know.

I don't know maybe my expectations were a little high, seems to me the 5 watt isn't a whole lot brighter than the 3 watt, it is however a whiter light. Its still not totally dark out and I'm basing this observation on its performance in the basement, I'll wait till its darker out and see how far the beam travels.

I guess this isn't a fair comparison the 3 watt is in a 2C Cell and the 5 watt is in a 2D Cell So maybe tomorrow night I will swap the 3 watt into another 2D Cell.

Question will it make any difference? I mean its still only drawing 3 watts

See Am_Fear_Liath_Mor's post above. The 5W LED is not as efficient as the 3W LEDs so it is not surprising it is not brighter.

Is that goal "brightness" or runtime? Even 1W seems likely sufficient in most emergency cases as long as the runtime is long enough.
