My girl just got back from her trip to Poland and bought me some interesting gifts. She knows that I'm into "strange" things and worries about me when I wonder around the state park in the middle of the winter. So she got me a special heat pack. Now I'm used to typical chemical heat packs. You break it, shake it around and it gives off heat. The thing she brought me is way different. It's a metal case that is lined with some kind of fireproof material. All this is sealed in hardcore stainless stell shell and outside is covered with felt like material. You take a stick of compressed coal and set it on fire. You put it inside the case and you have a really nice heater. You can set the stick on fire from two sides for double heat or from one side for steady warmth. those kind of handwarmer were actually the first handwarmer i found in a store....<br>They are cheaper to use, but eh... i dont like burning stuff between my hands...

Matt,<br><br>Those are quite common around here and seem to have largely suplanted the fuel-type catalytic hand warmers. It seems to matter greatly whose fuel sticks one uses - some of them are quite stinky. They do put off CO, of course - nothing to worry about in most circumstances.<br><br>My wife likes to toss one in each boot (toe area) and stuff with her last-worn socks when she sacks out for the night in the winter. I think they go out for lack of O2 about 1/2 the time, depending on which boots...

how do you put of one those warmer in your boot/shoe's ? they are kinda big compared to the chemichal ones...

Sporting Goods stores, Wally World, K-Mart, Bait-n-Tackle type places, Farm & Fleet, etc. I imagine Cabella's, Gander Mountain, and places like them have them available mail order, but they are so available locally that I've never bothered to look.. oh, try Campmor - I bet they carry them.

??? Not really. I don't have one at hand, but they are about volume equal to a US pack of cigarettes; a little thinner and longer IIRC. Wife has small feet (compared to me) and they fit in her boots. Perhaps you have a different model. The solid fuel ones come in at least two sizes last time I looked.

ehh... i still don't get how can you put a warmer( the fuel tablet one's ) in a boot/shoe, unless you buy a very oversized boot/shoe... the chemical ones are a lot thinner....<br>

She does it night while her feet are in the sleeping bag, not the boots! The warmer and her feet never occupy the boot at the same time, right, Tom?

I had the large model "sleeping bag warmer" about 20 years ago. I remember the smaller hand warmers being popular in my Boy Scout troop at that time. Mine always went out long before dawn, and it stunk, so I stopped using it. The handwarmer is a better concept than the sleeping bag warmer. Hopefully you will have good luck with yours.

Is this product safe to use in confined space such as tent since it's using oxygen to burn?<br><br>Matt

I don't know if it's safe, but my sleeping bag warmer was obviously intended for use in a tent and I never heard of any problems with them.
