Experienced, equipped, but still kept going when they knew they were lost.

"We knew where we were the whole time. We were never lost, we were stranded," said Terry.

Marion says they decided to keep going and "that was our mistake. We should have gone back."

(Also, kudos to search dog Loki and handler Roger Matthews for another live find.)

I've been there a couple times. I had all the needed gear to spend the night, but after spending weeks on end in the same place I just "knew" I was going the right way. The gps units (yes I carry two) even said I was going the right way. But after crossing two fences that I know I never crossed before I busted out the map only to find I had just walked three miles... in the wrong direction. Once I had my location I easily walked back out to where I should have been. Good to hear everything turned out for the better. I'm not familiar with the area, but couldn't they see the trail continue on the other side of the river?

They ate mushrooms?… Brave. Personally, I wouldn’t chance it.

"They ate mushrooms?"

Yes, I noticed that, too. I didn't think mushrooms had enough food value to bother taking the risk. So I looked it up, and all they have are about 6 calories and a few vitamin-type nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and selenium. Big deal.

A few dandelions leaves would have provided more nutrition.

Mushrooms are never worth the risk if there is any doubt at all. Even then, it's just added flavor for your real food. Dandelion greens are very good -- add some balsamic vinegar & olive oil and you've got a decent salad. So many people go out of their way to kill dandelions in their lawn, but they're one of the few plants in a lawn that are actually nutritious. Dandelions and clover make for a great lawn wink

Dandelions and wood or sheeps sorrel make for a good salad....

"...add some balsamic vinegar & olive oil ..."
and some croutons and some fried cubes of bacon and a mashed hard-boiled egg....
that's the way my mom used to make dandelion salad

Maybe they ate the magic ones, and it was the gnomes who led them astray laugh

I want to tell you a story
About a little man
If I can.
A gnome named Grimble Crumble.
And little gnomes stay in their homes.
Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine.

He wore a scarlet tunic,
A blue green hood,
It looked quite good.
He had a big adventure
Amidst the grass
Fresh air at last.
Wining, dining, biding his time.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.

Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Winding, finding places to go.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.
Ooooooooooooooomray.
