I've just finished a round trip between Mt. Vernon, In and Corpus Christi, Tx.

The Mississippi River is low and the currents are running fast at chokepoints and bends.
I only saw 1 "Tom Sawyer" type in an inflatable canoe.
I glimpsed the perfect camping spot on the River during this trip. It had a sand beach on an established, stable, sand bar with a sandy area back and above the river, totally enclosed by trees, that provide wind protection for the spot.

The Ohio River was a little high and had a slow current. The wickets were down at Lock & Dam #53.
I saw quite a few campers on the islands during the Labor Day weekend.
The water is moving slowly and is thus very clean and clear.

I find there are a lot of nice spots along the Intracoastal Waterway within the state of Texas. There are some good places in Louisiana but the waters are generally muddy with stirred up silt. Mosquitoes are always a problem except on windy days. Along the Texas coast, the wind stays pretty steady at 20mph most of the time. A calm Texas day along the coast is a rarity.

All of this scenery has me wanting to go camping as the weather has cooled down.
