My PSK seems to be moving from pocket to neck wallet, so I'd appreciate a few suggestions for a "breakaway" lanyard. I'd like it strong enough for confidence that the kit will stay with me, yet not so strong as to lynch me. I've fooled around with paracord linked with shrink tubing, but the shrink tubing released the paracord in time.<br><br>Any suggestions?

I used a length of rolled leather with two very loose stitches of waxed thread. It would break under strain but not casual carry. I stopped carrying anything around my neck. My filly decided big silk cowboy rags ( bandannas) were just the thing to play with. She pulled me off my feet from behind as I was saddling her mother.

While I was working as a lifeguard, I fiddled around with a few variations on this. I picked up a cat safety collar from walmart and sewed the buckle from that onto some thin 1/4 in webbing I had laying around. That was the best set up I found, the buckle would release, but it needed a pretty good tug. Since then I have seen breakaway lanyards at Office Depot if you don't feel like sewing, though I've never tried these. Hope this helps.<br><br>Chris.

What about a dog-tag chain. I use one as my break away neck lanyard for my ID badge/cardlock at work. Hasn't broken in 9+ years, yet will give way if my badge gets cought in a tool or something.<br><br>Good luck.<br><br>Gary

Someone here previously posted the idea of using a push button cordlock to join the ends of a lanyard as a breakaway.

A year or so ago you cautioned me (wisely so, it turned out- I WAS in a horse wreck and needed to kick out quickly) about having a lot of junk around my belt/waist when on a horseback trip. <br><br>You've terrorized me! I'm now so afraid of getting hung up by some of my gear, and dragged to death, that I walk beside the horse. In a canoe, I swim along side. Can't figure out what to do about planes yet.<br><br>Is there some cure for this entrapment fear I've developed?

You should use a breakaway chain found on Ranger Rick’s Special Ops Survival Necklace and other stuff you might buy.

I personally would prefer to rely on a home-made flint and steel than on a homemade neck lanyard. (ymmv :-) I presume the commercial ones for sale in Office Depot and similar places have been subjected to some sort of testing to guarantee that they actually will separate. A homemade one may not be testable. Of course, they're probably designed to break away at a fairly low tension; if you accidentally lose your office ID it's not a life-or-death mistake. But on the other side of the coin, having a breakaway lanyard that doesn't actually break away when you need it to could be rather serious.

My lady works for the post office and they gave them breakaway lanyards for their ID badges. It works great.
