I'm looking for recommendations for a basic GPS system to carry for SAR? All I need is a latitude / longitude and a backtrack function. everything else is just a bonus. has anyone had any good or bad experiences? Is there a GPS out there that allows you to enter a specific latitude/longitude and take you there? looking at the Garmin 12 or the eTrex. Any ideas?

We use Garmin GPS 12's. Good unit, not to much $$, easy to use. Also gives UTM coordinates.

Ted Fisher
Vermilion County Search and Rescue

Thanks for the tip; I compared the Blazer12 and eTrex in features, and found a few I liked better in the 12 (it floats). The local REI sold me their last Blazer12 for $59.95, definitely the right price (I think REI may be dropping the 12 model from their stock). They may have it priced for clearance at other places, or maybe the discount was because I got the display model.

On the down-side, the display of alphanumeric text and the compass rose isn't as clear on the Magellan; the huge compass picture on the eTrex is nice. But if you intend to bungee/velcro the eTrex to the deck of your kayak, you need to seal the battery compartment with drops of wax.
