tried to use some strike anywhere matches that I had waterproofed with wax and some with nail polish. (last year) they did not light because head was soft. I did not completely cover entire nail with polish so they absorbed humidity. Good thing I had some lighters with me.

The matches will take up moisture readily through the end grain. I keep mine in waterproof containers.

Yeah, I've not have very good luck luck with home-waterproofed matches. I've tried several coatings but they never quite burn as good as "naked" matches.

These days - at least around the home area with the Scout - I only carry naked strike-anywheres stored in a K&M long-sized aluminum matchcase. If I were heading into "real" wilderness I'd carry REI waterproof matches in the K&M case.
