I'm not a doctor or a scientist, so i don't know if the aluminum chlorhydrate in deodorant's contribute to diseases such as Breast Cancer or Alzheimer's, but I'm not taking any chances... That, and the fact that a good number of regular deodorants that contain aluminum make me break out in a rash...

I don't know if it's actually the aluminum chlorhydrate that cause me to break out or a coincidence though. I've done no clinical testing. LOL

I use Tom's of Maine Unscented Stick Deodorant. It does a good job for me, even on days when I work up a heavy sweat.

I remember hearing that some absurd number of breast cancer patients used an 'anti perspirant' which clogged their lymph nodes and helped increase risk of cancer.

I'm not a doctor but I did look into it as best as I could. One of the nice things is that aluminum powder is found in several forms in anti-perspirants (it is, in short, what keeps you from perspiring) but not in deodorants. I personally use old spice high endurance deodorant.

That being said, the aluminum compounds used have been tested repeatedly and have been proven safe. As best as I can tell the problem is actually that you are keeping the toxins in your body by preventing the sweat from pulling it out of the lymph system - and THAT is what is actually dangerous.

I know how I smell on a hot, humid day and going without anti-persp./deodorant is not very nice to other people around me. That is a hazard in and of itself!

sick

You can always smell the folks who don't use deodorant a mile away (or two).

I currently use Tom's of Maine Long Lasting Deodorant.....I work as a medic in south Florida and talk about sweat....but the Tom's of Maine is good for the smell.....I use the unscented variety.....it's nice.....

I've used the 'crystal' type....the type that you moisten and apply.....it never worked for me.

If you go to the website that herbG posted and click on the store locator tab, you can see the stores that sell it in Canada.

Places such as Drugstore.com sell Tom's of Maine products online.

I use Lavilin deodorant, it's available at health food stores and a lot of pharmacies. It only needs to be used once a week and contains no alumimum. Actually, I found that after a year of use, I only need to use it about once a month or less. Great stuff.

Here's a link to their website.

I use Tee Tree Oil Deodorant. To be honest, it lasts forever. Or seems like it. Its around $7. Also, never ONCE - no matter how much I sweat did I encounter odor. When you put it on, it is strong. But the tee tree oil scent disappears shortly after.

Don't feel bad I grew up in Maine and have never heard of it. I will stick with my Old Spice for now though.

Actually aluminum is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to dangerous chemicals in personal care products. There are over 800 toxic chemicals that are grandfathered in care products that the govt does not regulate. The chemicals are used because they are cheap. Most shampoos are so cheaply made that the bottle cap costs more than the product inside the bottle. Sodium Laurel Sulfate is actually a degreaser used is most shampoos.
Another chemical widely used is propolyne glycol. It is the chemical used in antifreeze. Many European countries will also not allow floride to be in the drinking water as it also is very toxic. Go look at your toothpaste. The back of the package says if children swallow more than a pea size amount you are to call the Poison Control Center. So much is dicussed here about survival, this is just another aspect people need to educate themselves in.

"...The back of the package says if children swallow more than a pea size amount..."

I just checked two tubes, Colegate and Aquafresh, and both say that if an amount "...more than used for brushing..." is swallowed to call for help, no mention of a pea, but your point is taken...

I've been using plain old baking soda as a deodorant for 25 years. It works fine under most conditions, but if you're sweating rivers, it washes off and you start to stink.

By the way, some years ago our tax dollars paid for a large study on what kind of people produced the worst body odor. Result: white women of western European descent.

Another useful tidbit for cocktail parties.

I've read a 50/50 mix of baking soda and cornstarch works well. The cornstarch is to absorb moisture. Never tried it myself.
