I'm going to be staying about 20 miles from there this weekend. Everybody is hoping for the best. There has been seemingly non-stop media coverage, some of it pretty worthless. Yesterday the local Fox affiliate broke from their regular coverage and cut to a lengthy report about a Mass that was being conducted for the victims. I thought that was pretty tacky. The last I heard they had broken through with a 2" drill and had lowered microphones down but had not yet heard anything.
I've heard that miners are required or advised to carry some food and oxygen with them. What is the "standard" food/water/equipment that they EDC? I think that if I were in that occupation, I'd go above and beyond the standard recommendation.

Today, three miners in Indiana died in an air shaft accident. Mining has got to be one of the most dangerous jobs out there... Here is a link to the news story.
