I found a wide variety of good looking kits from this supplier www.foxkitsinc.com , they are pricey compaired to some on the markets but seem like quality stuff.

A Doug Ritter review of some of them would be great?

Hmmm. Take a look at the "high desert hunter" kit

http://www.foxkitsinc.com/wilderness_survival/kits_and_gear/high_desert.htm

$319, designed for the (high) desert, but lacks a knife, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen or instructions.

Hmmm.

The kits seem pretty decent to me though I'd like to see some water with them. As to the sunscreen the desert kits come with:
1-Reflect™ SPF22 Sun Stick

The components seem of reasonable (coghlans) quality or better.

Two boullion cubes and 8 pieces of hard candy in a $180-plus survival kit? These kits are not particularly compact; couldn't they have sprung for some Ramen noodles or even a packet of Lipton Cup-a-Soup?

I also am a little confused about the need for a snakebite kit in a "cold weather survival" pack. The cold-blooded beasties are pretty dormant in cold weather. Or maybe the "cold weather survival" feature is just an add on to the "temperate" kit?

Teacher, I agree: Hmmm.

All in all, I am a tad underwhelmed.

In addition to what you guys said I was a little surprised that in some of the kits the only source of light is a couple of glowsticks, especially considering there are some very good flashlights that don't cost very much.

That FAK is a rip-off! While it is somewhat comprehensive (I have seen better for much cheaper) it is way over priced in a way to big pack for the level FAK this kit is.

Regardless of anything else, the total lack of a decent cutting tool marks these as unacceptable for me. A $10 mora or clipper would do the job, and not affect the price.
