Thanks all for the thoughts! We are up in a suburb of Minnepolis for a family reunion and have been going into the cities every day. eek I haven't seen the news this evening but it sounds like suprisingly few people died. Simply amazing! The scary thing is how many old bridges Minnesota has. Are any more going to fall soon?

I took my six nephews on a nature walk today. Can you believe they had never caught frogs before?! DD1 showed them how to do it. Not bad for a 4-yr old girl!

Blast,

Glad to hear that you and the family are all ok. I spent a weekend in Cleveland, OH and was shocked at the condition of the infrastructure. I didn't realize how spoiled I was in DFW because so many of the superhighways, bridges, etc. are relatively new or already upgraded.

The roads here on the North Coast of America do take a beating due to repeated cycles of thawing and freezing. The increases in permitted truck axle load limits over the last 20 years don't help, because the roads weren't designed for them. And Cleveland is suffering the pangs of being a shrinking urban area, which means less money every year to pay for maintaining the same infrastructure.

On the subject of bridges, though, since the Silver Bridge crossing the Ohio River collapsed with significant loss of life in the 1960s, Ohio has required that all bridges on public highways in the state be inspected every year instead of the every two years required by the NTSB on interstates bridges. An inspector with serious concerns is empowered to close a bridge on his own authority. Any bridge that does not safely meet current NTSB load requirements must be either posted for any restricted loads (e.g., "Vehicles Over 10 Tons Prohibited") or closed until repaired/replaced.

No inspection program is foolproof, but I don't think we've had a major bridge collapse since the Silver.

Frank,

I was actually returning to visit my parents in my boyhood hometown of Cleveland, so I'm aware of the weather beating the roads. I agree that the loss of a tax base in many large cities in the Midwest prevents proper maintenance of the infrastructure.

I was saddened to see many parts of Cleveland that looked abandoned. I couldn't believe how the Flats have collapsed. I have too many memories of college road trips down in the bars and restaurants.

On the other hand, I did see a number of improvements in other areas. I was impressed with what Lorain has done with the former American Shipbuilding site (parks, marinas, apartments, condos.)

It was nice to visit family, but I don't miss the Cleveland winters! eek

Brian,

We're 55 miles down the road in Ashtabula. I agree with all your observations, including about the winters!

Feel free to PM me if you're going to be back again, and you want to see our little slice of heaven.

Had a feeling you were ok. Good to know the gut was right.
