These and these are new, at least to me. Kind of like MRE PB, but you know what brand you are getting...

Those look good for camping and hiking.

Anyone have any ideas of what the shelf lives of these things are, and whether their shelf lives are shorter or longer than the regular jars of peanut butter?

One of those tubes with a slab of guava to go with it, just need to find wheat bread that has a long shelf life.

OBG, don't you need to have Grand added to your title?

It's not wheat bread but look into Sailor Boy Pilot Bread, if you don't know about it already. It lasts forever.

I didn't know it was Pooh-Bah, I wonder who changed it to that, and when? Must be Chris at work again...

Reply to query sent to Skippy:

The Skippy Squeeze Tube Peanut Butter is coded with a "purchase by" date found under the crimp.

The best when purchased date is the date that assures the best product quality and allows for a reasonable period of storage and usage (2 to 3 months at room temperature) after that date. It may gradually become stale over time. The best guide to freshness is simply smell and taste.

-Assures good flavor quality during use
-Normal changes in flavor as the product ages
-Lower peanut flavor, slight stale notes develop
-Taste to determine if acceptable for use
-No microbiological risk when properly used (Problems occur if consumer places foods with high water content into the product; e.g. jelly)

STORAGE

Best when stored at room temperature

-High heat can cause oil separation and flavor changes
-Refrigerated temperatures make the product harder to spread
-Unopened and opened jars of peanut butter may be stored at room temperature

Keep the tube tightly closed and store in a cool place. Peanut Butter may be refrigerated to retain the product's optimum flavor, but it will not be as easy to spread. Freezing is not recommended.

We hope this information is helpful!

Your friends at Skippy!

Hey, thanks for that. I haven't gotten to the store yet to compare the squeeze tubes vs. the jars yet.

What's the best way to get the peanut butter in the tubes?

The bottom is held closed with something similiar to a plastic cotter pin. A thin spatula, with a very light coat of vegetable oil to keep the PB from sticking, is used to pack the PB in. DO NOT OVER FILL. PB all over your gear is a pita.

I have always wondered...how do you clean all of the peanut butter out of one of those? I actually bought some once, but that was right before the ex and I split. By now she has probably burnt them, and all of the other goodies I left...

Not really, just make your buddy carry the chow bag. And sabotage his foot wear.

OBG,

Running hot water through them seems to almost melt the residue.

Neat site, thank you Russ. Please post and let all of us know how it is.

The last time i was at the grocery store i was looking for sailor boy pilot bread (thanks to Frostbite) and couldn't find it, but while i was in the ethnic food isle there was toasted bread by the box. The expiration date on the packaging was for sometime in 09 so i now have a box of toasted cinnamon raison bread in the back of the truck. It tastes good, but it is toasted hard all the way through. Little worried about it crumbling into cinnamon raison powder after bouncing around in the truck for a while, but maybe it won't last that long.

Sailor Boy Pilot Bread found near the bottom of a long list. My last vacation to Alaska I had to cram a box into my luggage. I grew up eating the stuff and since moving to TN can't find it in stores. I always expected to find it being sold to campers and hikers but no go. It is round and thick, comparable to the bread in MREs but somewhat like a saltine, and makes a good peanut butter sandwich (or mini pizza). It doesn't spoil or crumble easily.

Seen it at the local Wally and also grocery in my area, it was in with the rest of the peanut butter and also on the aisle with the saltines and graham crackers, I think.

You guys should check out Minimus.biz if you haven't already. Justin's Organic Honey Peanut Butter in a squeeze package (also Cinnamon Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, Maple Almond Butter, Honey Almond Butter...etc.). They also have a PB&J squeeze combo.

Other interesting things: Mainstay Energy Bars, Mini Tabasco sauce, honey packets, any condiment you can think of, individual packets of OTC medicine, travel size toilitries, etc. I love this site. grin Also, they're the official supplier of single-serving cranberry jelly to astronauts on the ISS. Who knew? No affiliation, etc.

I haven't tried any yet, but I'm planning on ordering an assortment of food from Minimus.biz soon for backpacking. I'll report back on how the PB tastes. It sounds good! But, what isn't tasty after a long day on the trail?

Sorry XBanker I live in NW Pennsylvania, we don't have much to chose from in the way of grocery stores...lol. I don't get down that way that often, I'm still looking though, Katie suggested a site I'm going to try, but I'll still keep looking locally though.

Thanks

Unless it says very specifically that it doesn't contain transfats, it does contain transfats

What is wrong with just storing peanuts? Whole seeds store longer don't they? Just grind them as you go.

New England Journal of Medicine just put out a big review of trans fat I believe in 2006. Even when it says on the label 0g trans fat it can still contain some due to legislation in the USA. Look for no "partially hydrogenated oils" in the ingredient list.

Hydrogenating oils not only gives them a different texture (as in PB) it also extends the shelf life of the product. So just storing peanuts will over time cause the fat/oil to oxidize and go rancid. If you do store peanuts you will have to rotate them relatively frequently.

I agree with your sentiment though...with a history of heart disease in my family the last thing I need is some dietary trans fat to exacerbate my genetic potential for a heart attack. No more skippy for me. frown

Cheers,
Nemo
