So if I drink two pints of british beer in a pub It's one American quart. I am 54mls shy of a liter, which any sensible German would spill anyway as an offering to the forest trolls :O)

There are 4.85 Liters in a gallon. There are 4 quarts in a gallon. A quart is larger in volume than a liter.

A litre (or liter) is larger than a US quart, but smaller than an Imperial quart. I believe an Imperial gallon equals 1.2 US gallons.

So I would conclude that Bob is a Yank and Mariner is a Brit. Am I right?

I'm surprised Mick! You're an Englishman. You guys invented the pint and quart, and we Yanks inherited it. The Liter is a French invention.
